California's Downed Animal Law

In January, 1995, California's downed animal law (Penal Code section 599(f)) went into effect. The law prohibits downed animals from being sold at stockyards, and it requires these animals to be humanely euthanized. Since 1995, many stockyards have complied with the downed animal law, and humanely euthanize downed animals on their premises. However, a couple facilities have failed to abide by the law, and they have been prosecuted for cruelty. To find out more about these cases click here: Turlock Conviction and Bakersfield Conviction.
